IC 5146, the Cocoon Nebula in the constellation Cygnus, together with the adjoining dark cloud Barnard 168

On the night of 10 August 2024, I pointed my telescope at IC 5146, the Cocoon Nebula in the constellation Cygnus. After a total integration time of seven hours, its distinctive pink-red core stood out clearly against the dense star field.

Almost as striking as the glowing cocoon, however, is the darkness immediately connected to it. This is Barnard 168, an extended dark cloud that trails away from the nebula like a broad band. This area is anything but empty: dense interstellar dust blocks the light of the stars behind it, allowing the cloud’s structure to emerge against the brighter background. The image is defined primarily by this contrast. The glowing cocoon and its strong hydrogen emission attract the eye first. Only then does the long, dark trail of dust become increasingly apparent, placing the comparatively small bright nebula within a much larger structure.
